Can Anyone Learn to Paint Flowers?
It is true, that some people are born with more of a natural talent in this medium than others. I’m sure you remember being told in school where you ranked in class. School is the first place where you are put in a bracket of being either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at art. The sad fact is, once you are told as a child that you are not good at art, you lose the confidence and enthusiasm to use your creativity in this subject.
When I was at school (some time ago now!), I was told that I had a talent for art. I loved the subject and did well in examinations. However, although I was good technically, I feel I lacked imagination. This, I believe, is just as relevant to being a good artist as technical ability. So, how many children in that year who lacked the technical skills, had a fantastic imagination? Once they were placed in the ‘bad’ category, they no longer had the confidence to use their creativity.
Some of my favorite paintings of flowers are not necessarily a true replica of the flower but an impression. Flaws and imperfections can add interest and style to the painting. A painting of a flower does not have to be perfect to be appealing.
It can be so intimidating to have a blank canvas in front of you waiting for you to induce your first move. Fear of making a mistake can prevent you from starting. However, it is the mistakes that you learn from. And with practice, you will become better. If it is too daunting for you to do a full painting, you can concentrate on individual parts of the flower. If you do not like it, try again until you are happy with the result. Then study another part of the flower. This will build your confidence up until eventually you will feel ready to create your own unique painting.
I do believe that anyone can learn to paint flowers, if they have the passion and enthusiasm to want to practice. The internet is full of good art tutorials and classes. So, if you want to venture into the art world and allow your creativity to blossom, why not give it a go?
Happy painting!
